Artist Statement

As a contemporary landscape painter, I attempt to capture the emotions of elements in the natural world. My paintings focus on the expressive qualities of sky, water, and earth, as well as manmade alterations of the landscape. I begin many of my paintings by observing nature, and then develop them in studio where my own ideas and experience are incorporated. While working on extended paintings, I have found that continual on-site observation at different times of day and in varying weather conditions is vital to the freshness of each painting. These spontaneous reactions add new emotion to my work and help to cultivate their originality.

Other times, I work purely from my dreams or my thoughts, responding to a specific feeling or mood. Most of my current work is inspired by the beauty, abundance and color of the Pacific Northwest. It is a region that continually motivates me to strive for vibrancy and life in my art. By noting the subtle changes in the environment, I hope to generate emotional connections between people and their surroundings.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
